Tower Bridge: The Story Behind London’s Most Iconic Landmark

Tower Bridge is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering that has dominated the city’s skyline for more than 125 years. With its Gothic towers, sweeping bascules and prime position beside St. Katharine Docks, it remains a symbol of London’s architectural beauty and cultural heritage. It is also famously mistaken by many visitors for London Bridge, despite the latter being a much simpler structure located just upriver.

A Landmark of Victorian Ingenuity

By the late 19th century, London’s rapidly expanding port needed a river crossing that could support bustling road traffic while still allowing tall ships to access the docks. Architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry proposed the winning design: a moveable bridge combining ornate stonework with innovative engineering.

Construction began in 1886 and took eight years, employing more than 400 workers. Beneath its decorative exterior lies a robust steel framework clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone, giving Tower Bridge its iconic silhouette.

How Tower Bridge Works

Tower Bridge’s most celebrated feature is its bascule mechanism, which lifts the roadway to allow vessels to pass. Originally powered by steam-driven hydraulics and now operated through modern technology, the bridge remains one of the world’s most impressive moveable structures. The high-level walkways, once used by pedestrians while the bridge was raised, now offer panoramic views of the Thames and London’s evolving skyline.

A Cultural Icon You Can Visit

Since its opening in 1894, Tower Bridge has become a global symbol of London, appearing in films, literature and photography. Today, visitors can explore the bridge’s glass walkways, engine rooms and exhibitions by booking tickets through the official site: https://www.towerbridge.org.uk/
